Beverly Smith is an organic artist who produces abstract drawings where she uses plant matter and pigments from an Aboriginal woman perspective.
About the artist
Beverly’s’ organic artworks are also transferred from the drawings to silver, bronze and brass jewellery giving a connection and recording her stories of Family, Identity, Culture, Country, and Aboriginal History.As a child, Beverly showed interest in the arts at school completing an abstract drawing where her teacher referred her to the principal for an award. Through her life, Beverly has been involved in different art forms and mediums.As a mature aged student Beverly completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Deakin University, Geelong and then completed a Master of Philosophy in Aboriginal Studies with her thesis titled ‘Exploring the Indigenous Curator in Regional and Urban Contexts’, University of Newcastle. In 2018 Beverly graduated with a Master of Visual Arts (Practice led) through the Print Media and Design unit at Australian National University, ACT.Beverly was a finalist in the exhibition, yapang Emerging Art Prize in 2021 – 22 at MAC Lake Macquarie. A finalist in the Koori Mail Indigenous Art Award in 2021 – 22 in Lismore Gallery. Beverly exhibited with artist, Nathalie Hartog-Gautier in 2019 at the Gosford Regional Gallery, NSW in an exhibition titled, ‘Paper and Place’.Beverly has been a finalist in the 2019 and 2020 Gosford Art Prize, Gosford. In 2020, finalist in the Goulburn Regional Gallery Art Award. In 2017 her artwork was Commissioned ‘For the Record Exhibition’, Enlighten Festival, Museum of Australian Democracy, ACT. In 2014 her artworks appeared in Weaving Circles, Selling Yarns 3, AIATSIS, Acton, ACT and Finalist of 2010 Parliament NSW Aboriginal Art Prize.Beverly has exhibited jewellery in 2019 at the Bush Bling Exhibition Darwin. In 2019 and 2020 the Emerging Contemporaries Exhibition, at CRAFTact ACT and in 2019 along with Our Land: Our Place Exhibition WAIn 2020, AIATSIS, ACT acquisitioned a jewellery piece, titled Eucalyptus Leaf Pendant Jewellery.Beverly has over 10 years curatorial, education and public programs experience and skills with the Museum of Art and Culture, Lake Macquarie, and Gosford Regional Gallery, Gosford.
